Sharjah is set to make history this October by hosting the sixth edition of World Stage Design (WSD), marking the first time this prestigious event will be held in the Middle East. Often referred to as the “Expo of the performing arts,” WSD 2025 will bring together leading minds in performance design from around the globe to showcase creativity and innovation under the theme “Tomorrow’s Heritage.” This theme highlights how the UAE’s ability to honor tradition while embracing technology is shaping its future cultural legacy.
Four Pillars of Innovation and Creativity
The event is structured around four distinct pillars, each offering a unique perspective on performance design:
- World Stage Design Exhibition: Showcasing the work of 100 designers in set, lighting, costume, sound, and video design at the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy.
- Theatre Architecture Competition: Inviting visionary ideas for performance spaces in a competition held at the historic Bait Obaid Al Shamsi.
- Technical Invention Prize: Celebrating technological innovations developed by industry technicians at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park.
- Scenofest: The “beating heart” of the festival, featuring eight days of performances, workshops, masterclasses, and live installations.
This comprehensive approach is designed to attract both industry professionals and the general public, demonstrating the collaborative spirit at the core of theatre.
The Significance of the Event
According to Project Director Jacqui George, hosting WSD in Sharjah is a tremendous privilege that will not only showcase the region’s existing talent but also inspire the next generation of designers. The event runs from October 18 to 25, 2025, with various ticket options available. The article concludes by inviting everyone to witness the future of performance design in Sharjah.
