Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has unveiled a new, unconventional member of his cabinet: Diella, an AI-generated bot. Named after the Albanian word for “sun,” Diella has been appointed to manage all public tenders and procurement processes. The government hopes that by using an AI, which is immune to bribes and threats, it can make the country’s public tenders “100% free of corruption.”
The Promise of Diella
The appointment of Diella is a direct response to Albania’s long-standing issues with corruption in government contracts, which has complicated the country’s bid to join the European Union. Diella is not the first AI tool the Albanian government has used; she was originally a virtual assistant on the e-Albania platform, helping citizens with state documents.
Public Skepticism and Unanswered Questions
While the move is a bold one, it has been met with skepticism. Social media users have voiced concerns that the AI could still be corrupted or manipulated, and the government has not yet provided details on the level of human oversight for the bot or addressed the potential risks.
